The LGBTQ community, especially LGBTQ people of color, are often the targets of racist, homophobic, and transphobic laws. GetEQUAL’s work on criminalization is led by individuals and communities of people who deeply understand how LGBTQ folks are targeted, profiled, and abused by “criminal justice” systems that often send people to prison simply for existing in an unjust world. This work is particularly centered around the voices and leadership of transgender women of color, who experience the deepest and most egregious impacts of criminalization.
Ky Peterson & Ashley Diamond
GetEQUAL condems the incarceration of Ashley Diamond and Ky Peterson, both trans people of color incarcerated in Georgia who have faced incredible racism and transphobia in their dealings with the justice system.
